Ryan Phillippe is going from playing a Julian Assange-type character to a cop on the rise.

The Lincoln Lawyer star, who will appear in the upcoming fifth and final season of DirecTV’s Damages, has booked the starring role in CBS’ untitled Greg Berlanti/Nicholas Wootton drama, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

Phillippe will play the cop at the center of the story, who rises quickly through the ranks from officer to detective to police commissioner in the project, previously known as Golden Boy.

Phillippe joins the previously cast Chi McBride and Kevin Alejandro. Wootton is penning the pilot and will executive produce alongside Berlanti and Richard Shepard, who will direct the Warner Bros. TV drama.

Phillippe will play a Julian Assange-type character on Damages, when the series returns in the summer on DirecTV.

The film is being released directly to video and will be available on Vod and in stores on September 20th.

A red-band trailer, and official release date for that 50 Cent/Bruce Willis pairing that I know you all have been waiting anxiously for, titled Set Up, are now public.

Ryan Phillippe also co-stars in the heist film written and directed by Mike Gunther.

The film was produced under the 10-picture, $200 million agreement that Jackson and his Cheetah Vision production company have with George Furla’s Hedge Fund Film Partners.

Setup centers on a group of friends who find themselves in the middle of a deadly diamond heist. Looks like there’s a little double-crossing and some other stuff.

Ryan Phillippe had to work really hard to get his role in The Lincoln Lawyer. So hard, that he says he actually had to audition for it!

Lionsgate is releasing the crime thriller The Lincoln Lawyer on Blu-ray Combo Pack and DVD on July 12. The film tells the story of a lawyer Mick Haller (Matthew McConaughey) who works out of the back of his Lincoln town car while representing a high-profile client Louis Roulet (Ryan) in Beverly Hills.

Casting for the film was no easy task and Ryan really had to work hard to earn his role.

“Ryan Phillippe, he had to win this part,” producer Gary Lucchesi says in the clip. “There were a number of actors who were very interested in playing the role of Louis Roulet.”

“They were really specific in terms of casting this part and really needed to see it,” Ryan explains. “A lot of times at this stage in my career I don’t tend to read for things, but I really wanted the part. It was something unlike anything else I’ve ever played before.”

But once he got the part, rehearsing came to a halt.

“We first went to the rehearsals and I remember we had a few hours blocked out to go over some stuff and I said, ‘You know what. If it’s alright with you Ryan, I’d rather not rehearse because in this film we don’t know a thing about each other until we meet,’ ” Matthew recalls. ” ‘I want to be surprised by what you do and you be surprised by what I do. Let’s rehearse on film.’ ”

The Lincoln Lawyer also stars Marisa Tomei, Josh Lucas, William H. Macy and Bryan Cranston and will also be available for digital download and On Demand this July.
